The Quintessential Quintuplets (2019-2023 anime)

by Avi Green

I'm not sure how many manga or anime series from Japan have actually tried out the concept of twins or more, but this is one of its sort that does the job fantastically as a comedy-romance-drama, and proves very charming in all respects.

Based on Negi Haruba's manga, it's a harem comedy about a high school student, Futaro Uesugi, who's hired to serve as tutor to a set of lovely quintuplet sisters. They're not exactly physically identical, and they certainly have varied personalities. But, their school grades are dreadful, and the father's hired Futaro in hopes he'll be able to get them to improve. The story is told in flashback, since later on, Futaro marries one of the 5, who is only revealed at the end.

Until then, the story features some pretty good comedy and drama that's tasteful, and makes for one of the best shojo stories of the past decade. It would see at least a few sequels, and if there's more stories in preparation, that too is a wonderful thing, so long as they keep up the charm.
